Product Description

Also known as the black tiger shrimp, the shrimp is easily recognizable by the dark stripes on its shell. Of all shrimp, these are among the most widely distributed and marketed shrimp in the world. Most black tigers on the market are farmed in Asia . The shrimp industry in Malaysia has developed rapidly since the early 1980s, that the country's average production (metric tonnes per hectare) is the third highest in the world, after Taiwan and Thailand.

Main Commercial Sources

Based on the Malaysia Food Production Action Plan (Fisheries Sector) that was formulated by the Fisheries Department, forecasted production of marine prawn (White Prawn, Penaeus penicillatus and Tiger Prawn, Penaeus monodon ) in the year 2010 will be 129,100 metric tonnes. This amounts to a jump in production by about 13 times from the 1998 level of 9,835 metric tonnes. ( Source: WRM's bulletin Nº 51, October 2001 )

Capture Methods
Giant tiger prawns come from marine fisheries as well as shrimp farms. Wild shrimp are primarily caught with bottom trawls. Farmed shrimp are raised in ponds.

The Caesar and Prawn Recipes Salad

  • 1 - 10 ounce bag or 1 head Romaine salad
  • 1 pkg "Et Tu Caesar" salad kit
  • 30 - 40 large prawns

Cook prawns and prepare salad according to directions. Pick out 10 -15 of the largest prawns and set them aside. Add the rest of the prawns to the mixed Caesar salad and mix well. Arrange the rest of the prawns on the top of the salad. Open a bottle of your favorite white wine and add garlic bread. This prawn recipes salad mix will make 2 very large dinner salads or 4 - 6 side salads. Enjoy!
